Hey, basically in the new year i am thinking of getting a new PC and will use it for intense gaming and 3D Architecture and Animation (rendering). So i was wandering which should i go for? Should i go for the 6 core with should be better for rendering like a i7-970 or a 2600k that i can overclock and get great performance out of.

The performance for the price is at least going to be better with the 2600K, LGA1366 is a dead end platform about to be replaced with LGA2011.

The gaming you won't see much of a performance difference at-least not to warrant the price gap. For your rendering the six cores would certainly be a welcome addition over the four and you will get a notable difference.

If you really need that performance boost than go with the six, if not I say go with the 2600K.

The 2600K will be better for gaming. The i7 970 will have an edge with rendering, although that may be a very slim edge since the 2600K will overclock higher normally. I don't think the extra $200 for the processor and an extra $50-75 for an X58 mobo is worth it as the two will perform similarly

A 3rd option would be to wait a few weeks and build a Sandy Bridge-E rig with a hexacore 3930K

3D rendering makes use of gpu acceleration as well.

Here's a comparison not much between them. Your disk setup and other component setup will also contribute. Just make sure you got a balanced system.
