I am making plans for a build, I don't even know if it will happen, but I was wondering if someone has and knows the process on how to turn a GTX 580 into a single slot card. The reason I ask is because I am planning on putting a liquid cooling block on it making the cooler single slot, but it still takes up two expansion slots on the case. All the outputs on the card are in a single slot, so is this reasonable?

If you are talking about taking the stock air cooler off and replacing it with a water block, yes. The air coolers are what takes up the extra space. Even if the rear ports are on both slots, a water block will replace the air unit just fine.

It's more of a thing of being able to put more cards in that space

Doubtful. Different mobos have different slot configurations, if you have specific components in mind. Might be worth looking into as new GPUs seem to all be dual slot, some even triple.
