The Core i3 has a newer architecture and is much faster.

I think that 20% is the figure put around. There is an article on toms showing i3/5 vs core vs pentium all at the same clocks and single core. But I can't find it. Its also 20% that in office use you may not notice, but all being nearly equal go for the i3.

The 1st generation Clarkdale Core i3 socket 1156 would be about 10% - 15% faster than a 2nd generation Wolfdale Core 2 Duo.

The 2nd generation Sandy Bridge Core i3 socket 1155 is about 10% faster than the Clarkdale Core i3.
