Should I switch my i5 for a i7?

Hi!

I have talked to the store where I bought the i7 and It is possible to switch this for a i5 2500K and get 74,28 EUR back.

Is there any reason to keep the i7? Im happy with how the computer handles BF3(heigh settings 50-80 fps avg 65 fps) and do not want it to perform worse.

I have also checked how much performance I will gain to get the GTX580 instead för 106 EUR but it seems to be a small bost, not even 20%. The GTX580 is about 24% more expensive then the GTX570 here in Sweden.

More about should switch
  1. No reason to keep the i7. There will be no FPS difference when you use the i5.
  2. buy an ssd
  3. In gaming, you will see little difference between the 2500k and 2600k.

    For price / performance, the 900 MHZ 560 Ti is simply untouchable.

    Guru3D uses the following games in their test suite, COD-MW, Bad Company 2, Dirt 2, Far Cry 2, Metro 2033, Dawn of Discovery, Crysis Warhead. Total fps (summing fps in each game @ 1920 x 1200) for the various options in parenthesis (single card / SL or CF) are tabulated below along with their cost in US dollars per frame single card - CF or SLI:

    $ 240.00 6950 Frozr OC (484/759) $ 0.50 - $ 0.63
    $ 205.00 560 Ti (455/792) $ 0.45 - $ 0.52
    $ 360.00 6970 (526/825) $ 0.68 - $ 0.87
    $ 205.00 560 Ti - 900 Mhz (495/862) $ 0.41 - $ 0.48
    $ 320.00 570 (524/873) $ 0.61 - $ 0.73
    $ 480.00 580 (616/953) $ 0.78 - $ 1.01
    $ 725.00 6990 (762/903) $ 0.95 - $ 1.61
    $ 750.00 590 (881/982) $ 0.85 - $ 1.53
  4. 2500k performance is similar as 2600k you would'nt see any difference.
  5. The primary advantages or features the i7-2600k has over the i7-2500k:

    1. Hyper Threading - Not really used at all in games, so you gain no benefit.

    2. 100MHz faster core speed. The i7 can get you slightly (and I mean slightly) better performance at stock speed, but that can be easily overcome by overclocking the i5-2500k.

    3. 2MB more cache - I suppose this can help improve game performance... but I have to say it will be marginal in the very best scenario.

    In my book, that means getting back 74,28 EUR is worth it.
  6. Yes I would change out the Intel® Core™ i7-2600K for the Intel Core i5-2500k if this system is mainly used for gaming for all the reasons stated above.
