Hi! I just subscribed to this group. I am very interested in digital
photography. Can someone recommend a good 'digital photo processing web
site'? Webshots? Ofoto? Which is best? I want to be able to: 1) store
my photos without any loss of picture quality, so I can always download
them etc, 2) request hi-quality prints to be sent anywhere.

I use Ofoto, but not specifically to store or display my photos. I just use
it to share family shots, student first solos, etc. They can order prints
easily with little hassle. I use a large external hard drive to store photos
and I back them up on DVD.
Another option is the Mirra server, which essentially is a box that acts as
a Linux file server. You don't have to do anything but plug it in and
install the Mirra software on your computer. Your photos are automatically
backed up at all times on the server. You can also give others access to
shared folders on the server using the Mirra web site.
You may have noticed that there is a troll plaguing this group with
off-topic cross-postings having nothing to do with photography and
everything to do with attempting to offend as many people as possible.
Please do not reply to anything posted by the troll. The troll has a habit
of spoofing legitimate posters in an attempt to get everyone to kill file
everybody else. If everybody ignores him he will eventually go away, so
please do not reply to off topic posts no matter who they appear to be from.

I use Ofoto, and have been pleased with the results. However, I've also seen
good comments about Shutterfly, and, if you like huge prints, try
www.jumbogiant.com.

While others will (and have) given good advice about where to get
prints made, I'll caution against using an on-line service for storing
your pics.
You should store your own pics. Hard drives and CD/DVD storage is
cheap enough that you should do this instead of relying on someone
else.
There have already been examples of places that have been used for
storage going out of business.

For printing there are a number of sites that are supposed to be good.
Personally I don't use any of them but a quick Google search "review
online photo" or something similar will get you reviews.
For storage... are you kidding? If you want to keep your photos then
buy some storage and do it yourself (including learning to keep at
least two, preferably three copies). Handing your files over to "some
company" may work fine, but will probably lead to grief in the end as
you have no control over how they store them. Also some of those
"online storage" sites have already gone under and how are you going
to get your photos back then?
I knew someone who set up an "online storage" company (back in the
earlier days). Had a really professional webpage and everything, but
when I visited him he showed me his "storage servers"... three pieced
together machines sitting in a pile of cat fur under his futon! Now
I'm not saying Ofoto et al. are like that but it still gave me pause
to realize that you sure don't know what the equipment on the other
end is, nor do you know who is running it!
If you want to keep a copy online to share with others, great, very
convenient. But I'd also have a copy on an external drive at home,
and another copy burned to CD or DVD and kept somewhere dark and cool.

Yes, even Nikon Net is erasing everybody's pictures because they are
revamping the web site. Any other web site owner is likely to do the same at
any time.
