i want to know the importance of loopback in networking. is it really compulsory to have a loopback for testing purpose. cant it be done without loopback??

You can do tons of testing without it sure. If you have the hardware and spare equipment to test you probably will never even use it.

That article has a link to the standards document that has more detail. It will tell you if the network interface is working right. If you can't ping the loopback there is something wrong with the TCP IP stack, or maybe a hardware error.
