My son has a Dell Inspiron 9100. The CD drive is very noisy when it
spins up. Does anyone know if there is any known issues with these
CD drives (failure rate). Thanks.

IMO, it's simply Dell design with a lot of case reverberation. I've
noticed the same on many Dell laptop models. You might also try
alt.sys.pc-clone.dell
