PSU for new rig

Hi,

I'm planning to build a new rig by the end of this month with the following configuration:

ASUS P8Z68-V (i7-2600k)
WD 1TB Caviar Black/Blue
Crucial M4 64 GB
G-Skill RipjawX 1600MHz CL9 (2 X 4GB)
MSI 560 GTX-Ti Hawk 1GB
CM Hyper 212+ Cooler

Am intending to run at about 4.0-4.3 ghz 24/7, depending on the quality of the processor I get. Will have 2-3 fans in the case as the place i'm going to keep the CPU isn't very conducive for airflow. There's a possibility of adding a new HDD perhaps in 1 or 2 years time, and either SLI or upgrade the gpu.

Was thinking of going with the Seasonic M12II 620W, but now with the fans and potential upgrades I'm wondering if it'll be sufficient to power the system?

    What is your use for this computer. It is most likely you do not need the i7 2600k. The seasonic M12II is good, but you may want to look into something like the Corsair HX750 for a little headroom. Should be about the same price, and just as good of quality as they are made by the same OEM as Seasonic.
  2. Will be gaming and using it for photo processing and some editing, other than the usual everyday usage.

    the HX750 is selling for about $70 more at my local store, and i thought it was built by CWT and not seasonic? does seem to have pretty good reviews though. just wondering if it was necessary to upgrade to 700w and above or if the 620w is sufficient. would i be right to assume that at load my system would be drawing about 450 - 500w currently?
  3. 620W is sufficient, but doesn't leave you any room for upgrades for SLI, so you would have to buy a totally new GPU, for example a GTX580, if you wanted better graphics, as your 620W would not efficiently handle a second GTX560.

    I would definately suggest you getting the i5 2500k as i don't believe you will need the 2600k for your functions. Even with the editing, i think you would not see a 50% increase in performance like you do price, the i5 2500k is more than enough. This chip still has very good OC potential, just like the i7 2600k.

    Oddly they don't give power consumption on 560Ti's SLI'ed.
  5. total consumption is roughly 380W-410W on SLI'd Ti's. If they are OC'd, it could go up to 500W total power consumption. the H750W from Corsair will give you proper Headroom, and even benefit a GTX580 rig. However, if you do not upgrade your PSU, i would suggest maybe getting the GTX580, as a single card will run no more than 300W OC'd, and roughly 245W on stock speeds. Would be a great card for this rig.
  6. Been reading up and it seems I should get a psu that allows me to run between 30%-60% of the rated wattage? That'll be more efficient right? I guess that makes the Corsair a better choice for me at the moment.

    Would the HT on the i7-2600k be a hindrance when playing games or doing any normal processing, because there seem to be certain reviews proposing that? If there's no downside to using that I think I'd rather opt for the i7 if i can afford it at the moment. although i realise i'd probably be under-utilising it heh (:
  7. yes. the 2600k is totally pointless for your use, but if you want to get it, that is your call. It will future proof you for longer, but in reality, every chip has an expiration date, and i dont think you will use the full potential of that cpu before it dies on you.

    just wondering, was planning on getting the asus p8z68v for my mobo, but the gigabyte z68xp-ud3 looks pretty good too. as far as i can tell the only difference is the BT support on the asus and an additional PCI x12 slot. any recommendations to make?
  9. Z68...if its in your budget, it will be a much better board for the future.
  10. Yea i'm planning to get a Z68 for sure. Just not sure if i should spend more on the asus or just stick to the gigabyte
  11. both are great manufacturers, though i tend to lean towards ASUS myself.
