Generic V.S. Branded

Hello. I have never understood the price jump from generic memory to branded memory like Crucial or Micron. Now don't think I have tested these two and came to a conclusion. What I want to know is how much better memory like Crucial is over Generic memory of the same specs.

genenric = could be a chance the mobo wont accept it
Brand name - the mobo will always accept

so pay alittle more for brand name you wont regret it

It really depends on what you are doing and what kind of performance you want. There isn't a HUGE difference, but to overclockers and people who have to have that 2 percent increase in speed (like me) it's important. Also, the latency is important. CAS1 is the cheapest (used for the average joe) and CAS3 is for peeps who do a lot of graphic intensive stuff. I personally prefer anything in the CAS2- CAS2.5

Anyways, branded stuff tends to generally be between CAS2 and CAS3 which can have a performance difference of UP TO 5 percent. I buy Crucial/Micron. Also, branded stuff usually has a lifetime warranty.

If you're not willing to spend too much extra and wanted brand-name memory, then I suggest you get Micron, as they are usually only a minute difference more expensive.

Just a slight correction. The lower the CAS rating, the "faster" the memory. To my knowledge, the best stuff available today is PC-133 memory running at CAS2. The "cheaper" stuff runs at CAS3. I'm curious, I've not heard of anyone selling CAS1 memory...does it exist?

Sorry, you guys are right lower the faster (got mixed up). I've seen CAS1 though. From what I understand, we're talking about the kind of memory they use in SGI machines.

So does that mean that Micron is to be preferred over, say, Kingston?

Personally, definitely not. I would get Kingston over Micron, but the price issue comes up, and Micron usually has a smaller price margin.
