Monitor goes to sleep without deskfan?

Hi all, strange title I know.

My desktop has a habit of putting the monitor to sleep if I close the case, or remove the deskfan I have shoved into it, and was wondering what could be causing the problem.

I originally had a nvidia 9800 graphic card in there, so replaced it with an old 7500 and still got the same problem. I cleaned all the crap from it and that didnt work either.

My psu is 300W, can that be the problem?

ok bought an OCZ 500w PSU, removed the desk fan and closed the case. Lets see if that was it
