Advice for camera dunce

I need to buy a digital camera for a year long world trip

Needs to be pretty good quality - c £300-400
Sturdy
Lightweight
With zoom

Can someone give me a few examples of what might be suitable


Also - on the subject of camera memory sticks - what sort of number of
pictures can you fit on the larger size of sticks?


Sorry if I appear a bit ignorant - but I've no idea about camearas and
the Internet\Mags drown me in info !
