What is value of purchasing a 3Com or Intel Nic card over an inexpensive generic. I'm going to connect 2 or 3 computers and a router.
Thanks

When it hits the fan, it make a mess.

You probably wouldn't notice any difference. The more expensive cards do make a difference in critical mission machines and the like though - better reliability and uptime - but most generic will suffice for the regular user.

Guess I'll go into some detail of some of the cards in my computers right now at home.
2 3COM 3C-905B-TX cards in 2 separate computers: no problems at all, Windows detects readily, very reliable.
DLink 528 (I think it is) 10mbps: quite reliable, haven't had major problems after configuring and installing with drivers.
AOpen 3--(forgot exact number) 10/100mbps: most problematic out of the four. Driver problems sometimes, but that might be me screwing things up. But when it's working, you can't really notice a difference.

I will try to avoid generic network cards. Some of them use more CPU power and not as reliable as brand one. You don't need to get an 3com or intel one. Netgear and linksys make great NIC too. They cost a lot less than 3com NIC or Intel NIC.

Never had a problem with my $10 pair of cheap NIC. Works great and I couldn't find any real advantage or disadvantage compared to my old 3COM.
