Alright, within the past month or so I've upgraded an old pc with a new motherboard and CPU.
The parts I kept are:
NZXT Apollo case
a 6 year old 320 GB sata HDD
a 4 year old BFGTech 8800 GTX OC
a 3 year old Apevia Iceberg ATX-IB680W-GN 680W PSU
A logitech mx518 mouse
Saitek Eclipse II keyboard
About a month a go I purchased:
Gigabyte z77x-UD3H motherboard (revision 1, BIOS version f7)
Intel ivybridge i5-3570k model#: BX80637I53570K
1x4gb Crucial DDR3 budget line not sure of model#
installation of new mobo/cpu was flawless, booted right up to my 320gb hdd which had Windows 7 32 bit installed. I booted to a Sandisk 4GB usb pen drive which is Win 7 installation media. Did a clean install on 320gb HDD, had some issues on last restart of install. Worked for several reboots(installed some stuff, upgraded drivers) and probably 3 out of 4 reboots, system would hang within 5 minutes of start up. I would have to restart 3 or 4 times for a "stable bootup". about 10 days ago it continually went to a black screen during bootup, and upon restarting I would get the whole "windows could not start up" would ask if I wanted to but into safe mode or try to repair(it wouldn't repair or boot into safemode).
So I did another clean install and from this point on using the 320gb hdd and an old 80gb hdd I found trying both Vista and Win7, It would usually install fine, but upon upgrading my GPU driver or my integrated driver windows becomes unbootable( I can boot in safe mode and roll back driver and boot up normally again) I had to disable windows update because they cause windows to be unbootable too (had to reboot into safemode for system restore). Clearly not an HDD issue because problem occured with two HDD's that worked in another system(I checked). I always tried troubleshooting in another forum on HDD's FOREVER.
I made a purchase from newegg at this point:
1 Thermaltake Frio heatsink
1 Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 1TB SATA HDD
1 ASUS DRW-24B1ST cd/dvd rw
new HDD worked like 4 times and now it's doa and I'm waiting on RMA from Newegg.
So I'm fairly certain my new HDD is dead.
I can't get my system to operate "normally" when using my other two hdd's. However they both work fine in other systems(clean installs). I think I might have a bad motherboard which is causing all my issues(except for dead new HDD which is probably coincidence) but it could be the CPU too maybe or possibly the PSU. So what do you guys think? Are there any "boot-to" programs that I could check my CPU with? Does it sound like a mobo issue? or perhaps a faulty psu issue?
