When upgrading, is all you have to worry about when it comes to compatibility the socket? Like if I have an LGA775 socket can I put in any LGA775 cpu out there? I'm a complete and total noob when it comes to this. I wanna swap my core2duo6700 with a core2quad9550. I have an old HP d4990y that I built off the HP site a few years ago, and I'm pretty sure when they gave you the option to pick your cpu the q9550 wasn't on there. Is that just because they didn't offer it, or it is incompatible? Thank you!

That would be the first step is to make sure that the socket types match , then you want to make sure that the motherboard will support the cpu that you want to put in. Just because the socket matches dosen't mean that all the cpu's with that socket will work with your motherboard. You want to make sure that the motherboard will support quad core cpu's.

Well when I was building the computer HP gave me the option of putting in a Quad Core, so I guess I'm good?

very simple words

1)socket of processor have to match the socket of mother board example 775/1155/1156/1366 or any the board and cpu both have to same socket

2)the FSB of the processor should match the mother board support of FSB like example 800/1066/1333 the board and cpu both have to same FSB

this is the simpler i can explain

if you are buying any procesor for any board tell me then i can tell you it is compatiable or not

thanks

There is a bios update for this motherboard, under the XP section of HP's website. If you apply it to your board (i ran it fine in Windows 7 x64 pro) it will add support for the Core2 quad Q6600 processor, which i now have running on this motherboard with no issues.
