I am running Win7 64bit, Athlon dual core 6000+ on Abit KN9 sli, 4gb ddrII with 750w PSU. I recently upgraded my 19" monitor to a full HD 23". Going from 1440x900 to 1080p seems to be taking its toll.

AMD 6850 or Nvidia GTX 460 should be good if thats what you want to spend.

I am far from being a hardcore PC gamer anymore but still like to have a blast on SCII, Dirt3, Mass Effect etc. Just want advice on next major step from 8800 sub £120

Your CPU will be bottlenecking any mid-range cards like the GTX460 or 6850.

I would reccomend upgrading your CPU before upgrading you GPU.

For roughly $180 U.S.(120euors) you can buy a new mobo and CPU.With just a CPU upgrade you should see a increase in FPS.Espically for games like SC2 and Dirt 3.
