Hello,
I'm taking apart my laptop to repair the power jack. When I lifted off the hearsink tehe CPU came out with it (stuck together).
I've read that I should carefully separate the two, plug the CPU back in, and then re-thermal paste the heatsink.
But if I was careful couldn't I leave them together and re-plug the both of them together? Doesn't the fact that they are so tightly attached to each other prove that they'll transfer heat effectively?
Thanks in advance,
J

If you want to be safe you should really clean off the old thermal paste and put new past on it. Even if it gets shifted just a little you might have heating problems. But there is the chance, of course, that it all works fine without reapplying the thermal paste.
