Hey everyone,

We just moved and I just got around to setting up the PC (that I built a year or two ago). Anyways, while Windows is booting, it randomly turns off. The next time I turn it on, I get a little "CPU Over Temperature" warning.

I opened it up and the CPU fan/heatsink are VERY loose (its some kind of i7 and the stock fan... I forget which exactly). Anyways, I was wondering if its ok to wipe off the thermal paste that's on the fan and apply some new stuff (I have a tube of AS5 lying around somewhere)? Or should I order a new fan entirely?

Thanks!

your first inclination is right on. Assuming the HSF is not damaged; clear off the old paste, apply a new thermal paste (less is more) then mount the HSF.
