I use a computer for email, searches, facebook, general reading. The programs I use are 2010 versions of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher, Access, Printmaster. I also use Gimp and other photo editing software and Bible study software. Sometimes I have 2-3 programs running. Do I need an Intel Core i5 processor or will an i3 series be fine?

Thank you! There's a $100 difference--big bucks to me!

Not only is a i3 good, you don't need an expensive one. Something like the G530 would do the job.
Spend your budget elsewhere. 8gb of ram, and perhaps a ssd.

Thank you for the great advice! Does ssd mean sound system?

SSD = Solid State Drive. It is 50x faster than any hard drive, and makes everything you do feel so much quicker. The only negative is price, currently about $1 per gb.
