Can I plug an 8 pin into my 4 pin CPU mobo

If you look closely at the pics of the connectors, you can barely see that it's actually a 4+4 connector, meaning that it breaks apart into halves, so you'll be ok.

Regardless, even if it WAS only a full 8 pin, it would still work just fine. You would just plug in the half that fits (they both don't, so you couldn't screw it up). You'll do the same with one half of the 4+4, actually. Only one half will fit.

I see the answer to the OP question is answered but why is there only a 4 pin cpu connection on some boards?

It can not be a cost issue between the two?

Because, usually, boards with the full 8 pin connector are boards that can be OC'd with, meaning that the extra power may be needed. That's not always the case, but it is more times than not.
