I am looking to purchase a Z77 motherboard with a PCIe 3.0 slot. However, the CPU I plan on initially using is a Sandy Bridge processor. I know that Sandy Bridge doesn't support PCIe 3.0, so my question is, what will happen with the PCIe 3.0 slot on my motherboard if I use a Sandy Bridge CPU? Will the slot run at 2.0 speed, will the slot not work, or will the computer not even POST?

it will work and run @ pci 2.0 ( and honestly you aren't missing but 1% performance). and yes it will post and perform w/o any problems.
