First build for gaming £400, any thoughts?

Forum Systems : New Build First build for gaming £400, any thoughts?

Word :    Username :

hi all. this is my first build and it will be used mainly for gaming and the usual (browsing the net, movies, music, ect.)
my budget i around £400, i already have: hard drive, moniter, dvd writer, keyboard and mouse.
i have done alot of research and finally decided on the parts. this is a budget gaming build, i will be gaming on a 19" 720p screen and dont mind lowering the settings. i dont need overlclocking, SLI/Crossfire, usb3.0.

here it is:

intel i5 2400(£151):http://www.ebuyer.com/251595-intel-core-i5-2400-3-1ghz-socket-lga-1155-6mb-l3-cache-retail-bx80623i52400
asus h61 mobo(£53):http://www.ebuyer.com/261406-asus-p8h61-m-le-h61-socket-1155-8-channel-hd-audio-matx-motherboard-p8h61-m-le-r3-0
2x2GB GSkill(£28):http://www.ebuyer.com/264746-g-skill-4gb-2x2gb-ddr3-1333mhz-ripjaws-memory-kit-cl8-8-8-8-21-1-5v-f3-10666cl8d-4gbrm
xigmatek white knight case(£30):http://www.ebuyer.com/274410-xigmatek-midgard-white-knight-case-cpc-t55dw-u01
Thermaltake 575W Modular PSU(£55): http://www.ebuyer.com/234911-therm [...] u-tpx-575m
EVGA GTX 460 1GB(£133.5): http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1gb [...] l-dvi-i-mi

i know there are better deals for the gtx460 but i went for the evga for the 10yr warranty, plus the rest werent that much cheaper.
also there were cheaper psu offers but i went for the 5yr warranty.

as for the ram i was told to get 1600MHz but the specs of the mobo says it only supports 1066/1333MHz, and i was told that its ok to get 1600MHz on a 1333MHz board, is this true?

so what do u think? will this build be ok for the next 3-4 yrs gaming at medium settings? is it overpriced? thanks

you might want to try this site http://www.scan.co.uk

you can save a little money. The build looks solid though (the ebuyer links didn't work for me). I would go with the Corsair PSU in your build or the XFX one below. With the savings you might want to bump up the GPU to a GTX 560 ~ £140 for future gaming.

The Thermaltake is definitely the best choice there; the XT *75 series is known for having ~1% voltage regulation on the 12V rail and and it is modular.

Out of the other two the Antec is the better, closely followed by the XFX. I would not consider the Corsair nor the Cooler Master.

At your resolution a GTX 460 should be quite strong for a long time.

Some how I missed the TT XT575 in your list an only saw the 3 at the bottom. I would take it over the ones I suggested as long as it fits in your budget. The XFX is a solid PSU it's just not modular.

thanks everyone. well scan charges £8 delivery so the few £s i would have saved i would have paid in delivery! as for the gtx 560 (cheapest £144 at scan) its the non-Ti version and i heard that its only about 15% better than the gtx460 and it comes with only 3yrs warranty (compared to 10yrs on the gtx460 from EVGA).

do u guys think that going dual core at the moment is not worth it? i know that most games only utilise 2 cores but i hear that games soon will start using more cores. so do u think the i3-2100 will be sufficient for like 4 yrs? iam not the kind guy who ugrades really.

also, is the "value" crucial ram fine or should i get something lie this http://www.ebuyer.com/264746-g-ski [...] cl8d-4gbrm
again not overclocking anything. thanks

The value ram is fine. unless you have extra in your budget.

The Dual core vs Quad core issue is something else to think about. if you have the money I would get a i5-2400 Quad. its pretty close to the performance of a i5-2500K. but less expensive.
