Pc hangs after startup

I recently faced with a very serious problem. My computer was perfectly working but suddenly it hanged. i tried Ctrl+Alt+Del key without any success. so i press the reset key to overcome with the problem. The XP window successfully loaded but it is permanently hanged . I tried to boot in safe mode but it stops in the middle.
Do you guys have a solution for this other than formatting cos i have very important documents saved in my hard-disks.

  1. Welcome to Tom's Forum! :)

Well assuming no hardware issue yep I'd backup the data and start from scratch, it seems the OS is probably corrupted. First before doing anything I'd check the RAM and create a bootable CD/DVD of Memtest86+, F8 to choose the DVD (ODD) drive and allow it to run for 4-full passes. If the PC 'locks-up' and/or you have Errors then you don't have a simple OS issue.

    Memtest86+ - http://www.memtest.org/#downiso

    Windows XP Repair - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058
Another Guide and as noted the Enter (first) then --- R (Repair) later - http://www.windowsxpprofessional.windowsreinstall.com/installxpcdrepair/indexfullpage.htm
