Hi,

I have a 1gb Gigabyte Nvidia 460GTX in a system with an original i5 750 and 4gb ram.

I've running an old Viewsonic vx924 1280x1024 monitor.

I'm in the market for a new screen, I was looking at a 16:10 1680 x 1050 screen as this will give me more real estate on my display but hopefully mean I can still play games on high settings at max res.

However just wondering if this setup would allow me to play games at high settings on full hd? or would I be better to stick to 16:10 and 1680x1050 with this graphics card?

Any thoughts? Any screen recommendations?

THank you

No please do not get the 16:10 1680x1050 monitor screen. Its always better to get a bigger screen. I would recommend to go with a monitor that has a resolution of 1920x1080 or more. and its also 16:9. 16:9 will allow you to watch movies on a full screen without having any vertical bars at the side. It covers your entire screen. and also when you play games, the images are more sharp on a 1080p monitor.

Even I bought myself a 1080p monitor. I did get a 20" 1600x900 monitor 4 days back but I realized my mistake and sold it to one of my friends for the same price and got a 1080p monitor (samsung b2230) just because of the image quality and a big screen display. Your GTX 460 will run games fine on that monitor (except for crysis and metro).

Trust me and get the 1080p monitor and you will not regret it.

naaaah, don't get that monitor. Its not bad though but its decent. I would always prefer to go something like asus, samsung, LG. benq or dell.

you can always find samsung monitors for cheap.

i5 750 is a still a good and a very capable CPU.

can you post me your complete system specifications:

motherboard, ram, PSU

and what kind of games do you want to play?

first of all. Your PSU is fine to run a GTX 460.

You may have to overclock your processor a bit but it is still good though. Overclock it a bit upto 3.2 to 3.4 ghz and you will be fine without any bottlenecks on the performance part. You can easily do it with that CPU.

4GB ram is also decent enough to play all games.

and finally the GTX 460 1GB will run most games at high settings (except for crysis and metro because they are not well optimized. Even a powerfull GPU such as the GTX 570 or a 580 cannot run those games at 60 + fps at maximum settings).

You will be fine with the GTX 460 1GB for now.

check out this review and you will get to know what I am trying to tell you:

Thanks for reply.

Silly question, if I got a 1080p monitor and ran it at lower resolution does driver/monitor automatically centre the image (i.e. leave black lines down sides) or does it stretch it?

Thanks

it stretches the image on a lower resolution. but running everything at 1080p will give you a much greater clarity as the images tend to stay sharp.
