Looking for compatible upgrade

Hey everyone

I built my PC back in 2009 with these specs

-ATI radeon 4870
-Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3
-650 Watt PSU
-AMD Phenom II
-4GB DDR2 Ram

And now at least two of those parts have become a tad dated for more demanding games such as Skyrim and Saints Row - The Third

Mainly my CPU, because both those games are pretty heavy on the CPU, and my dual core just is not cutting it.

So i'm wondering if you guys would know of a decent upgrade for my cpu, compatible with the rest of my parts.

Also would it be possible to reasonably overclock my CPU without it overheating?

Thanks

  1. For overclocking it would only matter on what heatsink you have.
  2. Yeah, i have never been familiar with overclocking so i don't really know.

Though the heat sink i have is the one that came stock with my cpu. So i'm not sure that's the best.

Upgrade to a cooler master hyper 212 :)
  4. Even if i had that, what would i be able to overclock it to?

    It's currently at 3.0ghz

Hyper 212 is a great if not the best for the price heatsink. People can get 4-5ghz oc with great temps.
  6. Ah. Sounds like a damn good heatsink.

But if i was just looking to upgrade from a dual core, what would be my best option?
  7. I'm not really sure of a budget just yet, I just want to know what would work with the rest of my parts.

    But what about these:

Are six core processors any good anyways?
