Your thoughts for an HTOC build

I have trolled multiple forums, but I need help/advice for a specific situation for a new HTPC. My requirements are as follows:

Use: Netflix, Hulu, Vudu, Email, Net browsing, streaming from my windows home server, replacement for my living room so I do not have to buy an ipad!! If possible would like to use for primary Blu-ray player (do need dolby trueHD support etc.)

Important connections reqd: Connect to a 55" plasma TV (via HDMI). Audio to be processed by a Denon AV receiver. And if possible would like to connect through HDMI to AV receiver which is connected to TV.

Budget: 500 - 700

Time to buy: asap

Need to buy all components. Would like small form factor (if no compromise in performance)

Would like the community's advice for component suggestions and also for technical difficulties I might run into when connecting to TV and AV receiver.

Thanks in advance.

  1. Looks good. The big question is, do I need a discrete graphics card with this APU?

8GB for HTPC? And 500W for a LLano system? Way overkill.

This will last for years! The only improvement you can do is to add a SSD. If you have a file server and you can get files from there then I would only add a small SSD for operating system!

  3. Did some research on the APU. There seem to be compatibility issues. My biggest concern is video quality on a 55" plasma. Also, none have commented on whether a audio card is required. I would really like to be able to run one HDMI with viedo and audio to my reciever.
  4. No need for another GPU. A8 has the best build in graphics, and I don't think you 'll have any compability issues
  5. What about audio? When playing blu-ray, how do I get bitstream out to AV reciever?
