Big problem, desparate for ideas!

Hey all

Had to replace my hard drive recently. Installed BGII SoA, then ToB,
patched it up, installed extra shopkeepers. This was using the same discs
and files as i used on my old hard drive witout problems. When i create
char or chars, and start a game, i cannot use the 'function' buttons at the
bottom of the interface. For example on a thief i click to detect traps and
in the speech box it says "detecting traps" and "stopped detecting traps"
straight away. Same with hide in shadows, and the lockpick one does nothing
at all!

I'm at a loss how this can happen, never mind think of a posible fix. I
have uninstalled/reinstalled a couple of times and the problem persists.
Anyone come across this before?

Maybe you have the AI activated and when you try to use one of those
abilities the AI tells the characer to do another thing. I know something
similar happens when you have a thief with the AI that make him detects
traps and then try to hide in shadows.

It takes one "round" to perform any action, this is a period of a few
seconds of game time.

Just wait a few seconds after hiding and THEN you should be able to
pick the lock.

However, you will come out of "hiding" the moment you attempt to pick
the lock, whether you succeed or not.

The thing is Jonathan I know how they functions *should* work, i've played
BGI and II for years. Its just that i've never had this problem with the
interface. I've tried waiting, doing other stuff then trying again,
switching to another char and back, and God knows what else :¬( Still can't
get the functions to work on any char type.

(1) The chances are, you have Party AI on, and there is some script
which is at odds with what you want your character to do. Turn it off
and you can do as you like. This is the main problem with ANY script.

(2) Alternatively, are you *absolutely sure* that your thief is not a
fighter/thief or indeed cleric/thief wearing armour heavier than studded
leather (which will disable thieving abilities)?

Do you maybe use a wireless keyboard or mouse?
There are some issues with BG2 and those devices... there's a post
somewhere at the Bioware Support Forums about that.
