yes i know that ll be above $500. i was thinkin i shouldn settle for anything less than a hd6850 (or a hd5770 worst case circumstances) on my rig since im gonna use it extensively for gaming. i can do okay with a decent cpu like the amd 955BE. Any suggestions ? about mobo and ram? my budget can stretch till max $550. thank you for your replies..

Hmmm...its a tight budget for a gaming rig.
I suggest this set up
motherboard:GIGABYTE GA-P67A-UD3-B3
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128476
An intel i5-2300 to keep the cost down
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115076
ram:CORSAIR Vengeance 4GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145343
psu:corsair cx 500w or the coolermaster extreme plus 500w
and for graphics the 6870,now you are on budget the cheapest not something specifice.

I wouldn't go with a lower PSU. I mean you probably could get away with it, but the PSU is like the lifeblood of your computer. A bad PSU = dead PC (or at least sporadic problems). It fits in the budget so I'd do it.

As for the GPU, ATI and Nvidia have very very comparable cards at any given price range. Hard to say which you should get, but I think this is a great card. You can read reviews yourself, but it's very comparable to a 6870. Here's 1 review: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-560-amp-edition-gtx-560-directcu-ii-top,2944-6.html

You might try an AMD CPU to shave some cost off. IMO You get more bang for the buck with AMD. Their 6-core CPU's are less than $200 now on www.newegg.com. I use 8 gbs of Corsair Dominator RAM in my machine. It does a good job for me.
Is your case a gutted commercial computer case or an aftermarket case. You don't want to stuff more modern parts in a case designed for a PII CPU and mobo unless you want to mod the case for better cooling. Will the PSU you want to use fit your case? Just some things to think about. Good luck.

wow.. actually the gtx560 gives better frames than the 6870. And as of now' im not planning to do any OC cuz im a complete n00b in that area... i have a PS3 for my games. Just wanted to buy a decent PC and game at >40fps at 1440x900 (thats the monitor i have) with the highest settings possible for all the games
