I am switching from a 3 channel mobo to a dual channel one. In my old set up I had 3x2gb sticks. I was wondering if I should get another stick of ram so I will have 8gb dual channel. If not I will have 4gb dual channel and 2gb single channel. I also have g skill ram with a heatsink. Does it matter if I get the same model of ram or can I just get any 2gb stick. I would prefer the same type because it would look nicer but if that is the only plus then there is no reason for getting the same kind. If it does matter here is the kind of ram I have.

Thank you for the help.

I'm not a fanboy of mix-matching RAM because the upside is overshadowed by the downside of problems; can you get another DDR3-1333 9-9-9-24 @ 1.50v to work then yes, but can mix-matching RAM's IC's cause problems then yes.

Best solution is to purchase a 2x4GB kit, and if it's for either a SB or IB or FX CPU then DDR3-1600 CAS 8/9 @ 1.50v.

Example G.SKILL F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231428

Or better if you'll ever need 4x4GB Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 8GB (2 x 4GB) 996995 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226191

If you have at least 2 modules installed, it will be in dual channel, but of course not that single module. As long as the system is stable with 3 modules, it should be fine. You can try the same exact type of module to see if it can work, but we can not guarantee it. This is why memory is sold in pre-matched, tested, guaranteed kits.

Thank you
