Xfx hd radeon video problems

i have been using an xfx 4850 for the last 3 months and for the first time my pc just blanked out on me..no really the video just turned of while the system still ran. from then on my pc would turn off occasionally and now still dealing with it. i did some research and found out many people seem to have this problem. but some say its not the video card, instead the hdd. i did have a hard drive problem the day before where my hard drive needed a disk check but the disk check would never finish. it would get upto step 5 and freeze. also when i try to open windows in safe mode. it also just freeze when trying to load up the files. my pc would run fine until i start playing some hradcore games, but when i check the temp it would only be below 60c. so i don't really know where my problem is so if some one could help out i would really appreciate it.
