Cannot obtain a valid IP address with a Netgear WNDR3700

I am having one hell of a time getting my new Netgear WNDR3700 router to function properly to allow my computer to access the internet. I don't believe the problem is the Netgear router itself, as I am experiencing a similar problem with a D-Link DIR-655.

Essentially, if I plug my computer directly into my cable modem, I have no problem accessing the internet. However, when I plug the computer into the router and the router into the cable modem, none of my computers can get on the internet. I know the router is functioning because I can access it using my iphone, and I can go to 192.168.1.1 and make changes to the router. On my computers, I can't even access 192.168.1.1.

When the computers are plugged into the router, the only IP address they receive is some slug address (164.xx.xx.xx) that does not work. Windows 7 reports that the computer is plugged into an "Unidentified Network."

I have tried a variety of options, including deleting my network adapter and installing it again. I have unplugged everything and started from scratch (Plug in cable modem, wait for lights to stop going nuts, then power on router with computers plugged in.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am to the point where I almost feel like re-installing Windows 7. PLEASE HELP!

Turn off your router, connect ONLY the PC to the router, make sure NOT to connect the modem to the router.

Turn on your router, wait until it is booted up, and check if you received an IP. If not try Repair function in your network card menu.

Hope you have an IP.

It might be that your modem is trying to assign 192.168.1.1 to your router. Therefore the router is confused since both WAN and LAN are the same IP.

If you have an IP, login to the router 192.168.1.1 and change then LAN IP to 192.168.254.1 and save the setting. Turn off the router.

Reboot your modem, when it is up, connect the router and turn it on. See if your computer is receiving an IP.

I will try this tonight. I know it is not the cable modem or the cord going from my computer to whatever it plugs into because the cable modem/computer have no problems accessing the internet when connected together. Because my main computer can access the internet when plugged into the cable modem, I know the problem is not NIC card related.

I will have to change the router's IP address using my iphone as it seems to be the only device that can access the router's GUI.

If this does not solve the problem, what do you suggest next? I am having the same problem with my D-Link DIR-655 router and its naitve ip address is 192.168.0.1. The naitive address for the netgear router is 192.168.1.1.

Previously, I have had no problem networking my computers. This is a recent phenomenon and it sucks. If your solution does does not solve the problem, what else do you suggest?

Attached are all the ipconfig logs from tonight.

1.) First File -- What ipconfig looks like when the computer is plugged directly into the computer

2.) Second File -- What ipconfig looks like when it starts screwing up and the computer is plugged into the router and the router to the cable moden

3.) Third File - Still plugged into the router, after doing an ipconfig /release. Note the crappy ip address.

4.) Fourth File - Still plugged into router, this time, I have gone in and manually changed my ip address

In each case, I do not get any internet access unless I am connected directly from computer to cable modem. Additionally, when plugged into the router, I cannot ping 198.168.1.1 -- I get an error message saying "Destination Host Unreachable"

I deleted Bonjour as I heard it caused problems. I flushed the DNS. I have done everything in my power to fix this problem. Networking shouldn't be this hard. It sucks, plain and simple.

Please help!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

I know this is an old thread, but I encountered the exact same issue last night with my WNDR3700. I found this thread because I was searching for issues related to an unidentified network, WNDR3700, and Ceton InfiniTV.

I ended up isolating the issue to my Media Center PC - it appears that somehow the Ceton card crashed and hijacked LAN connections so that all PCs on the network were unable to get a valid IP address. After swapping routers, plugging and unplugging, I finally realized that the Media Center PC was the cause. Powering it down allowed me to fix the issue.

I know...old thread....but search reveals, and for others benefit, I offer the following. If you are using a modem, and a router, let EITHER the modem OR the router provide DHCP; not both. Either bridge the modem, and provide authentication, if needed, on the router, or let the modem provide IP addresses as requested by the computers attached to the router. It really is that simple. NAT should be located at one place; not two or more in this simple configuration. Your WAN IP address needs to be shared by the computers on your LAN, and this is done with the aid of NAT which should take place at one point...not two.

I hope that's understandable and if taken into consideration, should prevent lots of problems!

Good-luck!

My Fix on Windows-7-Ultimate 64-bit: Manually set IP Address.

Longer explanation: I think my computer's problem with IP Address had something to do with so many devices on our home network. 5 Computers, 2 Phones. Anyway, I got the IP Address of my wife's desktop (which had internet just fine) and copied it with one exception: I changed the top right number (the first line) to a number higher than hers. Hers was a "5" so I put "10". worked instantly.

Hope this helps someone. I spent hours on all the little tweaks offered.
