for some reason the image on my monitor is shrinking. i'm now missing 1 inch from either side of the monitor - note, the image is still intact, but shrunk horizontally. vertically it's ok. there's also an hourglass shape distortion to the image. is it the graphics card or the monitor that is dying?

sounds like the monitor. Just fiddle with the buttons on the monitor, and that should fix it.
