I'm helping a friend setup his new DSL connection and computers. Right now, I've got his XP PC plugged into a Linksys BEFSR41 router, which is in turn accessing the internet through an Efficient 5100B DSL modem. This seems to be working fine, so far.
Also, he has two Imacs and an HP printer that we want to add to the mix. He's totally nontechnical, and I don't know anything about Imacs, and am just learning about networking. He would just like to be able to access the internet with the Imacs and access the HP printer from any of the 3 computers. Can we plug the Imacs and the printer into the router and easily accomplish this? (There are 3 open ports left on the router). Could someone give me a brief outline of what I need to do here? I don't think adding the Imacs will be a problem, but how can we make the printer accessible from all 3 computers? Any advice is appreciated!
Plugging the imacs into the router wont cause any problems. As far as being able to get them to see each other should involve just sharing a drive/folder on each computer.
If the printer doesnt have a network port on it then you will need to install the printer like normal on one computer and then enable sharing on the printer. You will then need to setup the printer as a network printer on the other computers pointing the wizard to the correct computer that is attached to the printer.
