Testing a 4850 with a generic PSU

I just bought a used 4850 for very cheap.

It has yet to arrive but i don't have a branded power supply to run it; all i have is a crappy 500w PSU that claims to send 25 Amps to the 12v rail. I opened it to see how much really it sends through the 12v rectifier and i found that the F12C20C diode just produces 12 Amps (max) at the 12v rail, which is extremely dissapointing.

I want to make sure the video card is working, as it is used, without buying an expensive branded PSU first to run it if it doesn't work.
Will the PSU explode if i try to run it with the 4850? just for a few seconds. 12 Amps have been enough to power a pentium e5200 @3ghz and a overclocked 4650 for almost two years, but im planning to buy a corsair or antec PSU if the 4850 is indeed working.

I dont think you'll have any issues with it, dont think it'll work longterm in a maxed out state but for idle should be no issues.

Does your generic PSU have at least one 6-pin PCI-Express Supplementary Power Connector that the Radeon HD 4850 requires?

The Radeon HD 4850, itself, may draw up to 9.4 Amps from the +12V rail during gaming. I'm pretty sure you'll want to test whether or not that part of the graphics card is functioning correctly.

No, it doesn't have the 6 pin pcie connector, but the card should arrive with one of those molex to pcie.
I want to do some gaming tests but i'm pretty convinced that there will be at the very least random reboots if i try to run 3d intensive apps.
Is there a way to see if the card doesnt have issues with games without getting it to consume 9+ Amps?

Does underclocking the GPU core and memory reduce the Amp requirements by any significant amount?

It should be OK to see if it works just don't put any load on it.

It seems to be working flawlessly.

Guess im a little too paranoid after hearing "houses burned to the ground" stories due to low quality PSUs
