Very strange OS problem with A21p

I had to replace the harddrive on this unit. I put
in a Toshiba 40G drive. So naturally I had to
reload everything. But it will not take w2k which is
what came with it. I keep getting files that won't
copy. I tried two different w2k cd's and also the
IBM recovery disk which won't load at all.

Finally I tried xp home and it works. However, the
lan doesn't work even though the device manager
says the driver is good. I can connect via a Netgear
card.

But I would like to make the 3com 10/100 Mini PCI
Ethernet adapter work.

I have the docking station and have tried it with and
without the docking station and get same results.

Any clues?????

Thanks Much!!!

When I check status of LAN it says the Address type is
"Automatic Private Address" with IP address 169.254.6.179
and subnet 255.255.0.0 and no default gateway listed.

When I try to renew IP, I get message that action could
not be completed.

You will need to go download the drivers for your card and then install
those.

I have seen similar to this a number of times before. Usually, when
this happens to me, I have to temporarily assign the card a static IP
address ( I usually use 10.10.10.10 ) then, reassign it to use DHCP.
For some reason once the OS assigns one of the Microsoft Automatic
Private IP Addresses, it doesn't like talking to a DHCP server until
you force it. The issue is that XP remembers the last IP address it
had, and tries to re-use it the next time it needs an address. Most
of the time, the DHCP server rejects the address if it is in the "MS
Private range" but, in many cases, the OS never seems to even ask
the DHCP server when the address is one that they assigned that way...

169.254.6.179 is a "phantom" IP address and not real - it's what you
often get when your ethernet card can't get a real IP.

Try to find a newer driver for the on-board LAN and install that.

Thanks all. I do have the latest driver. I will try a static IP.
Thanks to Jerry for the info. I have actually seen it before too but
it always fixed itself with new driver.
Thanks

I tried winsockxpfix which took me back to previous settings so I reset
the ip, etc and it looks good again but I cannot bring up a page. I checked
spybot update to see if it would connect and got a socket error 11004.

I don't know if that is a clue or not.

Thanks Again!

I did that and now it will not acquire an IP. I did an ip release (it did)
and a
renew (it didn't).

I've forgotten if this discussion is re: wired or wireless. If wired, check
to make sure your cable to the router is ok. Is there a light on the router
to indicate it sees the laptop and one on the laptop ( if it has one) to say
it sees the router?

Thanks tc. It is wired but the same cable works fine with a netgear cardbus
FA511. The built in 3com did work fine so I just can't figure why it
doesn't
work now.

Have you checked in Device Manager to make sure the internal LAN card is
there and operating properly. It might be necessary to remove it and let XP
redetect it.

Yes, I have removed it several times from Device Manager and it does
replace it. If I assign the right ip, sub., and dns info, I can get it to
look
like it is working but it won't bring up a page from web.

Did you try a boot disk like Ubuntu yet to eliminate the hardware as a
problem?

Thanks Andrew, I downloaded it lost energy. Maybe tomorrow. I'm not sure
how that program removes the NIC driver any better than a simple remove in
Device Manager. Do you know?
Thanks much!!!

You mean, how does Ubuntu remove the NIC driver? Well, Ubuntu is a
flavor of (Debian) Linux and runs completely without Windows. Linux
has its own drivers that have nothing to do with Windows. You could
unplug your hard drive with Windows on it if you wanted and boot
Ubuntu "live" from CD and run it (though it is slow).

Of course, you want the "live" (boot) CD of Ubuntu not the "install"
CD.

If you boot the Ubuntu live CD (will take some time) and it puts you
on the network automatically with your integrated NIC card, you know
it's a software problem not a hardware problem. If on the other hand
Ubuntu doesn't work for you either it could be a hardware issue with
your NIC.

You should also consider the Ultimate Boot CD I mentioned before as it
has a few network test tools too - again, you can boot without Windows
in the way and try to figure out if the hardware works.

Andrew
