Modem and Switch?

I just had a thought, what would happen if one were to plug a switch in to the modem (instead of a router), then pluged 2 computers in to the switch? would I get two Internet IPs assigned to those computer directly, or would only one get an ip and the other just go to APIPA address?

Never mind I tried it As I suspected it will only give 1 ip address to the first device it finds, and the other one is out of luck.
