Is an external drive the same as a new tower?

I need to have a dedicated computer for my work. I would like to share the monitor from my existing desk top tower. Will I need an external drive or a new tower? They have to be completely independent. What is the best way to do this?

If you'll have two completely independant systems, then you need a KVM switch to share the mouse, keyboard and monitor. As an example, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817399056 if you have a USB keyboard and mouse.

you also have the option of just remoting into your work pc from existing pc but this is not as safe, from a security standpoint, as the KVM.
