Do I need a DVD drive to have a working computer?

Forum Systems : Homebuilt Do I need a DVD drive to have a working computer?

So I just ordered my build and was wondering if having just a bootable USB for the OS is good enough.

*I only use the DVD drive to install OSs*

Mobo: ASUS M4A87TD/USB3

And does this motherboard support bootable USBs?

I can't remember the last time I used my DVD drive on my desktop. I get all of my games digitally nowadays. All current gen boards are capable of selecting USB as a boot device. You can always check the MB manual in the BIOS section to make sure though.

No, there is no reason to have a DVD drive unless you use it.

I tend to keep one in my builds just because I tend to use legacy software at times, but that's just me.

Motherboards can now boot off of USB's so if you need a boot disk, just use a USB drive.

You don't need a DVD drive in the same way you don't need a Floppy drive. If you don't use it, you don't use it. Handy to have "Just in case" though.
