Hey guys, scraping together a new build since there's some nice sales for black friday. I don't know too much about PSUs so i figured you guys would be incredibly helpful, as you usually are :) . I was considering going up to a 560ti or 6950 for a GPU so keep that in mind, as well as the possibility of crossfire/SLI in the future but that is doubtful. I was looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... but the 750w is definitely excessive and the 4 +12v rails kind of scare me (i have heard that you want 1 or 2 +12v rails, but again i hardly know about this stuff).

Thanks again!

something like this one

750w isnt excessive--it doesnt supply more than the pc is drawing--so if your pc needed 600w it would only

deliver 600w not 750w

750w gives you future proofing for sli or whatever other upgrades you might get

A power supply can have 1 x12v rail, or more ,even 6 rails. That is not problem. The problem is to be a good brand and an to be minimum 80+ certified. Good brands are ,Corsair,Seasonic,Antec,Enermax and even XFX,OCZ. A good power supply an gold certified : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Something to keep in mind, though, is PSUs are more efficient at 80% load than 50% load, so it's best to match your needs. 750w is probably a little more than you NEED for 2x560ti or 2x6950, but not excessive. It would be excessive for only 1 card, though. I wouldn't worry about how many 12v rails it has. An active PSU should distribute the power accordingly.

yup i realise its more efficient at 80% load--but i was allowing for him maybe going sli as he said and that he

would also be giving that 2500k the severe overclocking it deserves :D

according to extreme psu calc rounded up
i5k rec 11a
6870 rec 15a
xfire rec 24a diff of 9a
hd rec 6a
dvd rom rec 9a

i5k+6870= 26a
2nd6870+ect= 24a
80% of max= 63a x1 rail
32a x2
21a x3
16a x4

please correct me if I'm wrong

How does this PSU look? We decided to go with a 560ti and will probably not be considering SLI for a long time if it even happens. This leaves enough room for adequate amount of OC with just the 1 gpu, yes?

That has enough power to OC, sli, and probably both. If you're doing single card, you can probably save looking for something in the 500w range.
