I have to choose between these two, along with a core i7 2700. But it seems that the 3930k is better than the 990x at everything, and costs less. Is this accurate to say or am I missing something?

Solution
The 3960X benchmarked few days ago. in most cases it's 10% faster than the 990X

The 3930K reviewed here and becnhmarks shows it;s no more faster than the 990X, it's perfromance close to the 2600K in most situations.

Intel doesn't change prices on CPU's much. They hav there tiers and they stick to them.

The best non-EE core 2 quad chip cost about the same as a 920, which costs about the same as a 2600k. (~300)

When they stopped making the core2 xtreme it costs about a grand, the 990x costs about a grand, and the 3960 costs about a grand. It doesn't make sense but that is how they run there shop, and IT $eems to be working for them.

So, there is no reason (not even a tiny productivity gain) to choose a 990x over a 3930k? I understand the price tiers; it's what made me rethink this decision. The 3930k is almost 300 less.

Is there anything that the 990x is better at than the 3930k? Nothing whatsoever.

990x belongs to the old range of i7 processors, 3930k belongs to the new. There won't be many 990x selling. The only people who will buy it are those who don't want to change their x58 motherboard.

I doubt intel are still making the 990x, just running down stocks. They don't cut their prices because there's no competitive reason for them to, and they want to avoid the reputation of being a price cutter, which would tend to make people wait longer before buying.

Hmm, good find - I was looking for a review of the -30K the other day but didn't see one.

Anyway, if I needed a 6 core/12 thread CPU, the 30K would be the one I'd get instead of either the 60X or 990X, as it is around half the price. Just a mild oc and it would be up there with the 60X in most cases, despite the smaller L3 cache.

? I just read that review over. It performs the same in some benchmarks, and is faster than the 990X in others. Due to it being faster in some cases, I object to it being said that its no faster than the 990X.
