alright, lets say you had a very high draw PC, tri-SLI high-draw gfx cards and multible other cards and drives, water pump, LEDs, the whole shabang totaling up to roughly 1300W. not many PSU's out there capable of that.

what exactaly do u do to provide the power?

i've heard dual PSU's are a bad idea.

any way to retro-fit a server psu?

other than just being power hungry, what are the cons of booting dual-psu's off of one motherboard?

thanks in advance.

this is mostly just a proof of concept.

Well, you need to buy one of the PSU's that can provide the power you need.

Or use two power supplies.

The most power hungry combination of video cards that I have data on is 4 SLI'd GTX480's. They need about 850 watts.

Figure about 120 watts for CPU and 100 watts for motherboard, RAM and a couple of drives. Each additional 5 or 6 drives will need about 100 watts. Pump and fans - mybe another 100 watts max.

So, yes, you are up around 1100 - 1200 watts. A server power supply is not normally that powerful. After all, a server will not have 800 watts of video cards in it.

newegg lists 33 PSU's in the 1200 - 1500 watt size, including two 1500 watt PSU's.

There are plenty of PSU's in the 1200+ range. Just make sure you buy a good one because at levels that high a crappy one will take half your system out when it dies. It is going to cost you though, expect to pay at least $200 and likely closer to $300 for a good one.

I got an Enermax Maxrevo 1350w Gold PSU about 4 months ago and it is one of the better ones out there in the 1200+ range. I have nothing but good things to say about it. It's also on sale right now like $60 off on newegg. Cheapest I have ever seen it. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
