It's always better to spend money on a video card rather than relying on integrated graphics.
The Intel HD 3000 graphics core is better for games than the Intel HD 2000 and is only found on the "k" version of Sandy Bridge CPUs like the i5-2500k and i7-2600k. The Intel HD 3000 is slightly better than the Radeon HD 5450 desktop video card. It is quite impressive for Intel, but even the Radeon HD 5450 is not considered a gaming card. The Intel HD 2000 is probably around 20% - 30% slower than the Intel HD 3000 graphics core.
The best you can hope for with today's games with an Intel HD 2000 / 3000 (and Radeon HD 5450) is low resolution and low graphics settings.
To give you a sense of what the performance of the three above mention graphics cards/cores see the following review which includes the Radeon HD 5450. Note that the benchmark are based on high quality graphics and the PC used has an Intel Core i7-920 @ 3.8GHz. As mentioned before, the Intel HD 2000 is probably about 70% - 80% performance of the Intel HD 3000 / Radeon 5450.
