I have had this computer for over 3 years and this issue has only come up since I got my new Sennheiser headset. Basically, the sound will either just stop working silently or a loud screeching sound will repeat until I restart the computer. During this time, any program that involves sound will not respond and will not close unless I close it from Task Manager. A hard reboot is the only quick solution. It also feels that my computer slows down throughout the day until the sound stops working as there are signs of things skipping or taking longer to load as it gets closer and closer to failing.

I am currently on Windows Vista 32 bit using a Sennheiser PC 161 (not USB) and a Creative Sound Blaster X-fi sound card (older one before Titanium).

The only thing i can think of is that the sound card may be defective or not compatible with this headset. The only fix I can think of is to either get a new sound card or a 3.5mm to USB converter. Would either of these solutions work?

Edit: I already updated the drivers, did nothing to help.

Have you tried using the build in sound card in the motherboard. See if anything happens?

Somehow, I KNEW the soundcard would be an Xfi before I opened this thread...

Try the PAX or Daniel_K driver packs, and see if that resolves the issue.

Sorry for the delayed response. I will try the PAX drivers and update on how it goes tomorrow.

I tried the PAX download and it did improve the sound quality but I still get the freezing issue. I just had to restart my computer again to fix it.
