I'm trying to rebuild my home laptop so I reinstalled the OS ( windows 2000
pro) from scratch. When I rebooted the machine it detected new hard ware
ETHERNET CONTROLLER. I went to the device manager and the ETHERNET
CONTROLLER is under OTHER DEVICES. This implies to me that it hasn't been
recognized properly. I know it's a IBM 10/100 EtherJet Mini PCI Adapter
because I've been using it for 2 years. I tried loading the new drivers from
the reload disk IBM gave me with the machine and it couldn't find them on
the whole CD I downloaded them from the IBM web site same result. What is
going on here????

Are you sure you have the Windows 2000 driver for the ethernet
controller and not the Windows 98 driver? (They won't be the same.)
Did you extract the file you got from the IBM website? It may be an
exe file you must execute to extract the drivers.
Try going to Device Manager, click on the offending line for the
Ethernet card, and click "reinstall driver" and follow the path to the
driver files you extracted.

tried all of that Andrew to no avail. What is really weird is when I install
a DLINK wireless card in the pcmcia port I can't get that to work either, I
get error 10. Anyone know the correct interupt settings in bios on startup
for this stuff?

If given the choice, you should enable ACPI and Plug and Play BIOS.
Windows should be able to set all the interrupts for you and Windows
2000 is very good at this. You should most certainly not be
hard-fixing the interrupts in the BIOS. If you find a need to do
that, something else is probably wrong.
Are you sure you have TCP/IP networking installed? Did you try doing
an "add network" wizard? Is there a way to add Windows components for
Networking? Go to Control Panel and do "Add/Remove Programs" then
select Windows components if you can and see what is installed.
