I have an older AMD Phenom X4 9100e in my older gateway computer I ran cpu-z it's says my mother board manufactured by gateway and is a model rs780 the cpu says it's a am2+ (940) socket. I read here on tom's that http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103808 this product will work on a am2+ socket. I just wanted to double check before I bought it.
also is it just a simple unplug the old one and put the new one in (with some thermal compound). Oh I'm also still stuck with windows vista if that matters.

I will eventually change the motherboard too but I can't afford both right now (when I can I will just build a new system)

thanks for any info you can give me.

Well the processor your running right now is only 65w and the one you have listed is 125w so this means it possible your motherboard doesn't support it. Check your manual or look online and if it says your motherboard supports 125w processors then there's a good chance it would work. Also your motherboard might require a bios update to run any AM3 processor.

As for installing it, it's as simple as just taking the old one out and putting the new one in, the pins would match up.

I just did a quick google search and it turns out another person on Tom'shardware had a similar problem.
