Hi and welcome to Tom's forum.

If you have the budget go with this:

1- i5-2500k: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
2- ASUS P8Z68-V Pro/GEN3: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
3- MSI GTX 560 Ti: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

It's $100 more that your budget, but a very solid rig.

If you are really on budget, here is a $500 configuration:

1- Phenom II X4 955: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
2- Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
3- MSI GTX 560 Ti: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Generally the selection of CPU does not determine which is a better GPU or vice versa. Intel CPUs work well with both AMD and Nvidia, as AMD CPUs work well with both AMD and Nvidia GPUs.

Of the two systems liste by saint19 the Intel is far better for almost all uses. However, as you are not a hardcore gamer, you can probably get by with a lesser Intel processor and still have a very good system. The Intel i3 2100 series might be a better budget choice for your rig. But if you want the i5 2500K, all I can say is that it is aphenomenal chip.

It is not true IN ANY WAY that if you use Intel to go for Nvidia and AMD to go for ATI(AMD).

There is absolutely no optimization between the CPU and GPU according to brand.

I find Intel CPU's much better at the moment and AMD GPU's abit better because of prices/performance spec, better 2 card setup in HD6xxx scaling are better.

for that build and budget i would go with amd. its still slightly cheaper and whith the money i save on the motherboard and cpu i would get a better gfx card. assuming the psu could handle it.
