GTX 460 Core clock

Hello there everyone. I've been wondering about Clock and Shader speed of the GPU, specifically the GTX 460. The GTX 460s I've seen from the several manufacterers seem to differ in alot of things. I've been trying to compare the different GTX 460s from the different manufacters. So far the best GTX 460 i've come across was the MSI GTX 460 Talon Hawk. It offers a Core clock of 810 MHz and a shader clock of 1620 MHz. Another one that I've seen was the EVGA 01G-P3-1380-KR GTX 460 SSC. It's core clock speed is about 850 MHz and it's Shader clock is 1700 MHz. Despite it's great clock speed, I haven't really seen a single review of this specific edition of the EVGA GTX 460. So I was wondering if this specific EVGA GTX 460 is better than the MSI TALON HAWK, in other words, does clock speed and shader speed really define the potency of these graphics cards?

Here's a link of the comparison:

they might have different clock but most GTX460 out there have no trouble to archive 850mhz core clock with manual overclocking via third party software such as EVGA precision or MSI After Burner. if i were you i will not look at those clock since i know i can overclock them manually later (though those card that rated at its specified clock are guaranteed to operate at such a clock without any problem). but i believe that the MSI one have better cooling than the EVGA one.

Yes the difference matters, these cards scale beautifully going up (down is a different story) Question: Will you over clock ?
If yes get the Hawk card i have seen reviews of these cards holding above 1Ghz they are over engineered and Over clock very well. Thats why while being slower the Hawk is dearer.
If you wont be over clocking get the fastest one you can afford.

Yeah, I've read about it. It does go above 1 Ghz. So yeah i'll overlock. But given the fact that the 6870 performs only %20 better, will the OCed MSI TALON HAWK be almost as fast as the stock 6870?

You will have to work it on a price performance basis. The very best chips (460) will clock up to near the performance of a 6870 but most will fall short.
The fact that you can twang the nuts off of a 460 to get it near the 6870 is all well and good but then the 6870 can over clock as well. If the 460 is cheap enough then fair enough but if there isn't that much in it then getting a higher spec card in the first place would be the better bet.
If you just want to be able to say yea my 460 is as fast as a 6870 then go for it. ;)

It's very easy to clock the 460 to 6870 speeds. I don't know anyone who weren't able to hit 825mhz core clock. At that speed the 460 is faster than the 6870. Most of them top out around 850-900mhz.

I can easily say my GTX 460s at 850 core and 1900 memory is faster than the 6870.
