I am repairing an HP Pavillion Elite HPE for my brother. He spilled water into the case and it stopped working.
He ordered, and I received a new MOBO from HP.
I am concerned that if the CPU is also bad, that placing the bad CPU into the good MOBO will destroy the new MOBO.
Reason I pose this question is that I found some black crud (which I brushed away with an old toothbrush) on the ISL6333 chip near the CPU.
I looked up the chip, and found that it is a PWM controller used to regulate CPU core voltages.
After brushing the black crud away, I think I see that a couple of the pins look dark, as though there is corrosion on them. So I suspect that this chip had shorted out.
The PSU seems to be working. When I shorted the green wire to ground, the PSU fan turned on and all voltages were in-spec.
So, should I chance placing the same CPU into the new MOBO, or order a new CPU as well?
