Coolpix 8700 Battery Problem.

I am the owner of a Coolpix 8700 and love the camera but I have one
major concern and that is with the battery life. I now have 4
batteries that I rotate when using the camera and here is the reason
why. With the camera turned off overnight the battery will be dead the
next day. One day I put a fully charged battery in the camera and
formatted a new memory card. I did not take any pictures with the
camera at that time. I powered the unit off and set it on the table.
The next day I went back to use the camera and the battery was dead. I
placed it on a voltmeter and it read 0. I have since tried some
experiments and in every case no matter how many pictures I may take
the battery will be dead the next day. Do I have something set wrong
in the settings that is draining the battery. Any ideas will be very
helpful as this is driving me nuts.

How old is your camera? I would contact Nikon about this, especially if it
is under warranty, because it certainly sounds like a defect of some sort.
I have an 8800, and the battery life has been very good. I have a friend
who has an 8700, and he talks about having "no need" for a second battery
because he gets such extended usage from one battery. (In both cases, I'm
referring to the Nikon Lithium-Ion batteries).

The camera is still under warranty and it does not matter if
it is the Nikon battery or another manufacture. Same results. I have
sent the same message to Nikon but may call them to find out more
information. I have had the problem from day one after going through
all the settings. This is why I am not sure if I have something set
wrong or a defect.

This does not sound right, at all. The battery should not be drained even
if you left it on all night because the camera will turn off after
approximately 1 minute (unless you changed the default). I have found Nikon
technical support to be very helpful, and I would certainly call in a case
like this -- ask for information on how to send the camera in for service
while it is under warranty. The telephone number is: (800) 645-6689. They
will ask for the serial number and date of purchase. If it is "very" new
(such as, 30 days or less), I think I would first go back to the place of
purchase and ask for an exchange.

It shouldn't be like that. Silly question: are you turning the camera off
or leaving it in standby overnight?

Sounds like a service is needed.

Sounds like a defect in the camera, not in your settings. Take it back
to the place you bought it from, and see if you can get a replacement.
Or, call Nikon and tell them your problem, and ask for a replacement.

Thank all for the advise as I called Nikon today and the tech was a
pleasure to talk to. I described the problem and he documented
everything. The tech had never heard of the problem and gave me all
the instructions on sending the unit back for warranty repair.

I had a few other questions about the camera and this guy answered all
of them. He was a pleasure to talk with. The guy was a great example
of how customer service and support should be handled. Great no hassle
service.

That has always been my experience with Nikon support -- considerate reps
who answered all of my questions and never made me feel "dumb."
