I had decided to go for an i5 2400 over an FX 8120 till I came across these

Opinions? The 8150 seems to beat the i5 in some while the i5 beats the 8150 in the other.

Im confused once again :pfff:

EDIT: Another thing, the FX seems to show a lot of framerate fluctuations. Whys this?

i would wait for a stepping revision with the fx-8150...not sure how much it's going to be worth at this point though.

whats a stepping revision?

Il be buying the parts sometime after AMD's 7 series is released. Probably next March or June or so, if that helps.

it's similar to a "patch" for software, only it's for hardware (CPU)

Has such a revision ever improved performance?

The entire system in my mind is almost the exact same cost, right down to CPU and board, +/- 5 dollars or so.

yea it has. type b2 or b3 stepping "phenom" in google or something. whatever corrections they make , the intel chip you mentioned will still beat them. my only point was if you had your heart set on buying an 8 core processor, i'd atleast wait for a stepping revision.

Not really, I thought of the 8120 in case future software improvements can help it work better- it seems to be bang in between the 2600 and the 2500 when all 8 cores are loaded properly. Well il wait anyway, if it can get it closer to the i5, then il go for it.
Else, il stick to a 2400.

Thanks man :)

yea supposedly the next version of windows will utilize it better....they are basically fighting to be at least a respectable #2 as opposed to just worthless. at least in terms of desktop cpu's.

Reply to Frizzo

I dont mind it being a "no 2" so long as its good value for money in the long run.....lets wait and see. Still a few more months to go before I start buying parts. If AMD cant improve their game, definitely an i5 then. Thanks for the helpful replies :)
