Hi Guys,

I’m in the middle of my first build, and after lots of looking and reading, I still have a basic, dumb question.

I have a Seasonic X series MODULAR 750W power supply unit.

I am going to connect the PSU to my Gigabyte 990XA-UD3 motherboard, using the main 24-pin power supply connector.

The end of the cable that plugs into the MB is obvious: there are 24 pins to plug into the MB power port, and 24 holes to receive it.

My question is about the other end of the main power cable, the end that plugs into the PSU. (If it weren’t a modular PSU, I wouldn’t have any choice but to do this the right way. However, it is modular, and I don’t know exactly what I’m doing.)

The PSU has a diagram on it that indicates where to plug in the main power cable. Instead of just being a 20-pin or 24 -pin area, as I had expected, it seems to want me to plug the PSU end of the main power cable into two separate areas on the PSU, one right above the other. One is a set of 10 pins, and the other is a set of 16 pins.

Obligingly, the main power cable, on the end that will plug into the PSU, is divided into two “clumps” of receptacles, one clump having 10 holes, the other having 16 holes. That would give me a total of 26 pins connected at the PSU end, and the typical 24-pin connection at the MB end. But since I’ve never come across “26 pins” mentioned anywhere, I wonder how I’m supposed to plug the power cable into the PSU. Should I use all 26 pins at the PSU end? Or just 16? Or just 10? I think I know the answer, which is to use all 26 pins on the PSU end, but I don’t want to blow up my motherboard.

Thanks for any help!
-Heather

Yes you have to plug all/both/26pins into the actual PSU.
